Canada beats US 2-1, advances

Canada 2, United States 1

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan Strome scored in the first period, and Canada beat the United States to advance to the next round.

Jacob Trouba scored for the US. The Americans need to beat Slovakia on Monday in Group B to move on.

The 19-year-old Nugent-Hopkins was the first pick of the 2011 NHL Draft by Edmonton. The center had 52 points in 62 games for the Oilers last season. Bruins pick Malcolm Subban had 36 saves to lead Canada.

Canada faces Russia on Monday to determine which team gets a bye into the semifinals.

Finland 5, Switzerland 4 (SO)

In Group A, Finland beat Switzerland on a shootout goal by Markus Granlund, who also scored twice in regulation.

Czech Republic 4, Latvia 2

Martin Frk scored two goals to lead the Czechs to a Group A win. Goalie Patrik Bartosak made 18 saves for the Czech Republic.

Slovakia 2, Germany 1 (OT)

Peter Ceresnak, a New York Rangers draft pick, scored on a one-time slapshot from the left circle to beat Germany goalie Marvin Cupper on the power play in overtime.
