Alex Semin clears waivers, possibly ends NHL career

Is Alex Semin's NHL career over? Reports suggest it might be after Semin cleared waivers Thursday and agreed to terminate his contract with the Montreal Canadiens.

According to Igor Eronko of sports-express.ru, Semin could be headed to the KHL.

Semin has a reputation as a semi-wasted talent. The winger reached 40 goals in a season in a highly successful 2009-10 campaign, but he never matched that again and instead received plenty of criticism from coaches who seemed frustrated by Semin's work ethic.

Semin spent six seasons with the Capitals before signing with the Carolina Hurricanes the summer before the NHL lockout. He signed a five-year contract extension with the Hurricanes in 2013, but the team bought out his contract in June of 2015. Semin then signed a one-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens but never panned out, totaling four points (one goal, three assists) in 15 games before the team and Semin reached a mutual decision to part ways.
