Teddy Bridgewater injury: Should Vikings trade for Mark Sanchez?

What does Teddy Bridgewater’s injury mean for the Minnesota Vikings, and should they consider calling Denver for a spare QB?

On Tuesday, news broke that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater suffered a serious injury, one that had some teammates kneeling beside him in prayer as an ambulance rushed to the stadium, per reports on the ESPN network.

Bridgewater’s injury leaves a void at quarterback on a team that has high hopes for the upcoming season.  For now, the next quarterback on the Vikings depth chart is 36-year-old Shaun Hill, who has seen little action during his time in the NFL.

One intriguing option for the Vikings is Mark Sanchez, currently of the Denver Broncos and previously of the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles. Yesterday, NFL.com reported that the Broncos were looking to unload Mark Sanchez, contacting the Dallas Cowboys to see if America’s Team has interest in a player who is better know for the butt fumble than any recent contributions to an NFL team.

The Broncos are looking to get rid of a quarterback, and the Vikings need one. Could we see a deal in the future? Sanchez’s productivity has waned over the last few seasons. In 2012, he had an unremarkable season, throwing for 2,883 yards and 13 touchdowns in 15 games. He saw no playing time in 2012, and then played just 13 games over two seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Comebacks are not unheard of in the NFL. Kurt Warner had years of lackluster play before he found success with the Arizona Cardinals. Sanchez is certainly not the next Warner, but the Vikings are in desperate straits in an increasingly quarterback-starved league. Sanchez is a safer choice than San Francisco 49ers Colin Kaepernick who has underperformed since the departure of former head coach Jim Harbaugh in 2014. He started only nine games in 2015 and threw for only 1,615 yards. With the attention he has attracted for his decision to sit for the national anthem and his lack of productivity, Kaepernick is an even riskier choice than Sanchez.

The Vikings are in a tough conference and cannot compete without a reliable quarterback. Sanchez is not ideal, but these are urgent times for the Vikings. A decent offensive line, support from the coaching staff, and an arsenal of offensive weapons could help Sanchez perform adequately.
