Redskins News: Josh Norman Upset With Postgame Drug Test

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Josh Norman had to take a postgame drug test following Sunday’s contest against the Cowboys. Should Norman be upset?

It appears as though the Washington Redskins may be growing frustrated after a 0-2 start to the season. After reports surfaced that some offensive players were losing faith in quarterback Kirk Cousins, a star Redskins defender made headlines. Josh Norman was subjected to a random drug test following Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

According to ESPN’s John Keim, Norman sounded off to the media after being told that he would take a drug test. Perhaps the loss to the Cowboys made his emotions more apparent, but here is what the corner had to say:

How the NFL has us drug tested right after the game, I don’t understand that. I really don’t. It’s crazy. Don’t have anything left in the tank and they want you drug tested? I don’t understand it.

Norman absolutely has a reason to be angry. It seems ridiculous that the NFL would even attempt to test a player immediately after game time. Players are usually exhausted after a game. Adding a drug test to their postgame routine is just overkill. They have already gone out and played an entire four quarter game, so why have them take a test immediately after? As Norman said, “What’s [waiting] a day gonna do? It’s stupid.”

At the same time, the NFL technically does reserve the right to test a player whenever they want. The league’s drug testing policy specifies that “specimen collections occurring at a club facility, stadium or scouting combine venue will be conducted at the discretion of the Medical Advisor and Collection Vendor without advance notice to the player.” This was outlined in the Keim article as well.

Still, though the NFL reserves the right to conduct a test, it may be best if they do not continue to test postgame anymore. The players are often spent and sometimes frustrated in the case of a loss. Their bodies are usually not in good shape, and that makes me wonder if it is possible for a sample to be misrepresented as a result. It just is not a great time to do a test, but the NFL can do as they please per the agreed upon drug policy.

Overall, this story is just a classic case of a player taking out his frustration following a loss. Had the Redskins won this game, Norman likely would not have complained as much. He may have still been upset, but certainly not at the level that he was on Sunday.
