'He can't hide': Deadline set for Leaf's surrender

A Texas district attorney set a Thursday morning deadline for Ryan Leaf to surrender on drug and burglary charges, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on its Web site.

If Leaf does not comply, the DA has threatened to form a dragnet to find and extradite him from the Vancouver area, where authorities believe he is living.

"He can run, but he can't hide and we will find him," said James Farren, the district attorney for Randall County, Texas.

Leaf's attorney, Bill Kelly, who has said Leaf would turn himself in this week, downplayed the idea of a dragnet.

"All this stuff about extradition is hype, neon-sign hype, as far as I'm concerned," Kelly told the paper.

Kelly did not say which day this week Leaf would turn himself in.

A warrant for Leaf's arrest has been out since May 20, when a grand jury issued nine indictments related to alleged use of prescription painkiller medication. Leaf faces up to 20 years in prison on the felony burglary charge alone, the paper reported.
