49ers CB Jimmie Ward ruled out for Week 4 vs Cowboys

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

San Francisco 49ers starting cornerback Jimmie Ward has been ruled out for the team’s Week 4 home bout with the Dallas Cowboys. Ward suffered a non-contact quad injury in the Niners’ Week 3 loss at Seattle.

The San Francisco 49ers have struggled mightily with injuries to receivers and tight ends. The bug has apparently crossed over to the defense as well, with Jimmie Ward officially out for Sunday

The Niners’ starting Number 2 cornerback, Ward went down with a quad strain last Sunday during kickoff coverage. There was no contact involved in the play.

Ward has subsequently been ruled out for Week 4. This leaves the 49ers with Keith Reaser and Rashard Robinson vying to take his place opposite Tramaine Brock. No matter who starts, both cornerbacks will likely see plenty of playing time in today’s pass-happy NFL.

Dak Prescott has performed well so far, especially for a rookie thrown into the fire after the starter, Tony Romo, sustained an injury. (Though Romo getting injured really surprised no one.) Prescott has thrown for 767 yards, completing 66 of 99 passes (66.7%) in only three weeks, despite only managing one passing touchdown.

Reaser and Robinson will not be up against Tom Brady or an elite quarterback, fortunately, but Prescott certainly isn’t bad. Both will need to have a good game, as losing Ward will hurt an already weak 49ers Defense.
