Utah Jazz: Michale Kyser Joins the Salt Lake City Stars

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Michale Kyser, formerly one of the nation’s best defenders as a collegiate at Louisiana Tech, is set to join the Utah Jazz D-League affiliate, the Salt Lake City Stars.

The Salt Lake City Stars announced multiple roster moves on Saturday. The D-League affiliate team of the Utah Jazz is officially bringing forward Michale Kyser into the fold. The Stars had previously acquired his returning player rights from Raptors 905 on the eve of last month’s D-League Draft.

To make room for Kyser on the Stars roster, the team waived big man Eric Dawson.

After going undrafted out of Louisiana Tech in 2015, Kyser played for the Toronto Raptors entry into the Las Vegas Summer League. The 6-foot-10, 205-pound big man would go on to spend the year in the D-League with Raptors 905. In 43 games with the club, he averaged 3.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game in limited action.

Following a turn with the New Orleans Pelicans during the Vegas League this summer, he signed on with Tadamon Zouk of the Lebanese Basketball League.

As a collegiate, Kyser was one of the nation’s better defenders. He graduated from Louisiana Tech as the Bulldogs’ all-time leader in blocked shots. Over the course of his 139-game college career, he averaged 2.6 blocks per game and was an All-Defensive Team selection in the WAC (2013) and Conference USA (2014-15).

Dawson, meanwhile, had been part of the Utah Jazz training camp roster before joining the Stars. After moving to the D-League affiliate, he started two games before injuring his foot. In his brief tenure with the team, he averaged 6.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.

The Stars will be back in action on Saturday night with a road bout against the Texas Legends. Their next home game is against Northern Arizona Suns on Tuesday, Nov. 29.
