Tyler Zeller: "It would be nice to have an extension" from the Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics have a few players on their roster who will enter restricted free agency next summer if the team doesn't extend their contracts before Halloween.

Incumbent starting center Tyler Zeller is arguably the most critical. A seven footer who can run the floor, finish around the rim and from the perimeter, rebound and play decent enough defense (in certain match-ups) is valuable.

The Celtics don't want to lose him, and apparently Zeller wants to stay. Will he? Here's what he told CSNNE's A. Sherrod Blakely:

Zeller wants security. He (probably) also wants to make a lot of money, and it's an opportune time to hit free agency next July when the cap rises by about $20 million.

If the two sides come to an agreement before then, expect it to be on a long-term deal that's far below Zeller's potential market value. If not, Boston can always match whatever offer sheets Zeller receives on the restricted marketplace.

“It would be nice to have an extension, just a little more security,” Zeller admitted. “But at the same time, you have to approach the year and you can’t be heartbroken if you don’t get it. You have to make sure you’re fully prepared. Either way, I have to do my job this year. I have one more year on my contract. So I have to go out and do as much as I can to help our team this year.”
