Stephen Curry offers up trolling trash talk before Warriors visit Cavs
When the Golden State Warriors visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday for the first time since clinching the 2015 NBA title, the defending champions will feel right at home in the road locker room.
So says Warriors point guard Stephen Curry, anyway, who referenced Golden State's champagne showers in his trash talk prior to the second meeting of the season between last year's finalists (via Bay Area News Group):
"Obviously, walking in the locker room, it'll be good memories," Curry said Sunday. "Hopefully, it still smells a little bit like champagne."
Completely removed from any current context, it's an excellent little piece of smack talk. It's not even that inflammatory, really; it's more about the memories of winning a title than, say, claiming that Cleveland belongs to the Warriors. But things aren't perfect for the Warriors lately, especially after an 18-point thumping at the hands of the Detroit Pistons on Saturday. If the Cavaliers manage to protect their home court on Monday, this line from Curry might end up flying back in his face, however it was originally intended.
Also, let's not forget that the Warriors struggled at times against Cleveland in the Finals. Since the Cavs were missing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, the outcome of the series wasn't ever really in doubt. Still, it took Golden State six games to win the title. It wasn't a sweep, even of the gentlemen's variety.
Of course, the best revenge for LeBron James & Co. would be to fill the visiting locker room at Oracle Arena with the sweet smell of bubbly. But any chance of turning the tables on Golden State will have to wait until June. For now, there's one last regular-season meeting between each conference's top team.
