How Memphis' defense has crushed Portland's offense
The Grizzlies are known for having one of the best defenses in basketball. Marc Gasol has a Defensive Player of the Year trophy on his mantle, and the backcourt tandem of Mike Conley and Tony Allen is borderline impenetrable.
Still, their overwhelming success against Portland's offense has been somewhat surprising. Here's the Grizzlies blog Grizzly Bear Blues with more on the situation.
"In the postseason, Memphis is averaging 8.5 steals per game and 8.0 blocks. The Grizzlies are ranked third in opponent field goal percentage this postseason, holding the Blazers to 44% shooting overall. Plus, the Grizz are forcing Portland to shoot just 30.4% from beyond the arc. During the regular season, Portland shot 36.2% from three. Although the Blazers are missing some key players, the Grizzlies' defense has been impressive nevertheless."
If Memphis can close Portland out in tonight's Game 4, will its stingy defense give them a puncher's chance against the Golden State Warriors?
It's definitely possible.
