XFINITY Series race to the Chase points update after Mid-Ohio

Published Aug. 14, 2016 9:44 a.m. ET

Despite a wet and wild race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the NASCAR XFINITY Series on Saturday, there was no change among the top 12 in the points standings.

But, with just five races remaining before the inaugural XFINITY Chase for the championship begins, the battle for the 12 playoff berths is getting more intense.

Twelve drivers will make the XFINITY Chase -- and with the top 12 remaining the same, two drivers on the outside looking in -- Ross Chastain and Dakota Armstrong -- lost a few points with their results in Saturday's race.

After a 14th-place finish, Chastain is still 13th after losing one point on Blake Koch, who sits 12th in points. Armstrong also remains in 14th after losing eight all-important points as a result of a 21st-place finish.

The seven-race XFINITY Chase will begin at Kentucky Speedway on Sept. 24, and will feature two elimination rounds before the Championship 4 drivers are determined for a winner-takes-all season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

JR Motorsports driver Elliott Sadler continues to maintain the points lead, with Daniel Suarez, Ty Dillon, Erik Jones and Justin Allgaier rounding out the top five.

Jones has a series-high three victories and is already a lock for the Chase, along with Sadler and Suarez with one win apiece. No other series regular has been able to break into Victory Lane this season.
