Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt Jr. highlight preliminary Indy entry list

Published Jul. 18, 2016 2:38 p.m. ET

The entry list is out for this Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is shaping up as no ordinary race.

For Tony Stewart, who is retiring as a Sprint Cup driver at the end of this season, it will be his last shot at winning one more time at the famed Brickyard in his home state. After winning earlier this year on the road course at Sonoma and finishing second last Sunday at New Hampshire, a resurgent Stewart suddenly looms as one of the pre-race favorites at his home track, where the Indiana native has won twice previously.

Then there is the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet entry.

On the official entry list released by NASCAR on Monday afternoon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was listed as the driver of the No. 88 for Indy. But we all know that's no lock.

Earnhardt sat out last weekend at New Hampshire because of concussion-related symptoms and as of Monday afternoon was still awaiting clearance from doctors to be able to get back in the car for Indy. If he cannot race, Hendrick Motorsports officials have said former four-time Cup champion and current FOX Sports analyst Jeff Gordon, who retired from full-time Sprint Cup competion at the end of last year, would replace Earnhardt behind the wheel of the No. 88.
