Schumacher wins Arizona Nationals

Tony Schumacher beat Morgan Lucas in the tire-smoking Top Fuel final at the NHRA Arizona Nationals on Sunday for his 70th career victory and fourth at Firebird International Raceway.

Schumacher and Lucas lost traction early and both drivers were on and off the throttle as they navigated the dragstrip, with Schumacher able to get his 8,000-horsepower dragster under control first.

Schumacher had a 4.606-second run at 213.20 mph, while Lucas finished in 4.652 at 258.67.

''When you can win ugly like that it is so much fun,'' said Schumacher, who beat Sidnei Frigo, Khalid alBalooshi and Antron Brown to reach the final. ''Both cars were set up to run really fast and we both overpowered the track. It was lift, pedal, lift, pedal all the way down. I could hear Morgan beside me the whole time. As a driver that kind of race is so much fun and I enjoy winning like that more than a record run.''

Schumacher leads the series standings after two races.

Ron Capps topped the Funny Car field, and Erica Enders-Stevens won in Pro Stock.

Capps raced to his 39th career victory and third at the event, outrunning Matt Hagan in the final round. Capps powered his Dodge Charger to a 4.064 at 314.90, while Hagan's Charger trailed at 4.158 and 300.33.

Enders-Stevens outran top qualifier Mike Edwards for her fifth career victory. She used a quicker reaction time in her Chevy Cobalt, finishing in 6.538 at 211.99. Edwards was a 6.520 at 213.74.
