Report: Injured pedestrian dragged under vehicle in track infield
A South Carolina man reportedly suffered serious injuries and remains hospitalized after being dragged 98 feet under a SUV while leaving Charlotte Motor Speedway after Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600, according to information provided by the City of Concord, North Carolina to the Independent Tribune newspaper, which covers the area where the speedway is located.
The newspaper identified the injured man as Daniel Delk, 34, of Summerville, South Carolina, and reported that witnesses told police they saw Delk sitting on a tow bar connecting a motor home to a SUV it was pulling. As the motor home turned to exit the infield, Delk reportedly fell beneath the SUV and was dragged on the asphalt roadway leading toward the closest gate out of the speedway.
The newspaper reported that local law enforcement officers were called to the scene at 12:32 a.m. Monday and met with the driver of the motor home -- identified by police as Timothy Clontz, 35, of Indian Trail, North Carolina.
The Independent Tribune reported that police found Clontz to have no impairment and that he is not expected to be charged.
A visor, sunglasses and cigarettes were on the ground roughly 40 feet from where the victim lay on the ground, as previously reported early Monday morning by FOXSports.com.
Emergency workers and EMTs were quickly on the scene, and traffic was diverted to elsewhere in the speedway as they worked on the victim.
Emergency workers were able to load the pedestrian into the back of an ambulance and took the pedestrian to the infield care center. The pedestrian was then transported by helicopter to a local hospital.
Law enforcement officials were seen gathering eyewitness accounts and taking pictures of the scene.
