Cars are on track and the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race is finally back underway at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Rain returned to Bristol Sunday after it caused the race to be halted after just 48 laps on Saturday night, delaying the rescheduled start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the 0.533-mile short track. It had been rescheduled for a 1 p.m. ET start, but was delayed again by more rain until closer to 4:30 p.m.

But now the track has been dried and the race is finally underway again.

The race was started Saturday night after a 30-minute delay, but was called off after only 48 of the 500 scheduled laps had been run when persistent heavy rain and lightning forced the grandstands to be evacuated a total of three times.

It had been rescheduled to be restarted at the point where it left off at 1 p.m. ET Sunday. But that did not happen after the rain returned in full force again Sunday morning and again in the early afternoon. The Weather.com forecast called for a 35 to 45 percent chance of more rain between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET, after which it drops to 20 percent.

FOXSports.com will update this story throughout the day and evening as it continues to develop.
