Race fans have spoken: Taking away Truex Jr., Johnson penalties was wrong

Race fans have spoken loudly and clearly on the hottest issue in NASCAR after the decision was made last week to change the way the sanctioning body will assess penalties for the remainder of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
The question was asked in the wake of NASCAR's decision not to penalize Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson after their cars flunked laser inspection following the first Chase race at Chicagoland Speedway.
NASCAR determined that giving a 10-point P2 penalty for both drivers for being minimally out of spec at the post-race laser-inspection station (LIS) wasn't fair, even though that's the penalty that had been applied for such infractions during the regular season.
The thinking was that Truex won the race and was going to advance in the Chase no matter what, while a 10-point penalty could have kept Johnson from advancing. So they didn't penalize either driver.
And we asked you, the race fans, this simple question: Was NASCAR right to take away penalties for Truex and Johnson?
More than 14,000 readers checked in, and 66 percent of those who voted in the poll said no. Only 34 percent said yes.
