Practice 1 results for Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond
Friday morning and already it's blazing hot at Richmond International Raceway, where Kyle Busch set the fastest lap in the first of today's two practice sessions in advance of the Federated Auto Parts 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
That Busch and his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota topped the speed charts was hardly a surprise; he has four victories here and four overall this season, which ties him with Brad Keselowski for the series lead.
Busch's best lap at Richmond was 120.979 miles per hour, which edged Darlington winner Martin Truex Jr., who ran 120.649 mph in the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota. Busch's teammate Denny Hamlin was third, with Kasey Kahne fourth in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and Matt Kenseth fifth in yet another JGR Toyota.
Today's second and final Happy Hour round of practice runs from noon to 1:25 p.m. ET, with qualifying set for 5:45 p.m.
Saturday night's race will be the 26th and final event in the Sprint Cup regular season. When the checkered flag falls after the Federated Auto Parts 400, the final field will be set for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
