Keselowski goes for wild ride, crashes out of Sprint Unlimited
After a fairly dicey start to the Sprint Unlimited at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Brad Keselowski brought out the first caution of the night on Lap 23 when he wrecked through the tri-oval, ending his evening.
The incident occurred as the field raced off Turn 4 in a large pack. Midway through the pack, Kyle Larson's No. 42 Chevrolet moved up the track and made contact with the rear of Joey Logano's No. 22 Ford and the left front of Keselowski's No. 2 Ford.
While Larson and Logano were able to save their cars, Keselowski's ride shot to the inside of the track, dug into the grass, and shot back across the track. Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson had to make evasive maneuvers to avoid Keselowski's car.
Making significant contact with the outside wall, the Team Penske car then shot back down the track, sending Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon through the frontstretch grass to avoid contact.
After the incident, Clint Bowyer had a piece of debris lodged into the nose of his No. 15 Toyota, and was forced to hit pit road.
When asked if he went up too high off the corner, Larson told his crew, "No, I didn't get up too far at all."
Keselowski did not point the blame at anyone, chalking it up to superspeedway racing.
"Obviously I made contact with the 42 (Larson) and the 22 (Logano), and I couldn't tell if someone made contact with me from behind," Keselowski told FOX. "I ended up in the grass there, and when all that happened, it's not good. It tears the front end of these cars up quick.
"Just part of racing at Daytona. Really happy with the speed in the Miller Lite Ford. We've got a lot of racing left in Speedweeks, and this is just a preliminary (race). We'll be ready to go when it counts in the (Daytona) 500."
The incident served as the competition caution that was planned at Lap 25 of the 75-lap race. Matt Kenseth went on to win the race.
