Mikko Hirvonen retired from the Jordan Rally after crashing on Day 2 in the opening stage, which was won by world champion Sebastien Loeb of France.

Hirvonen, who won the race in 2008, crashed 2.8 miles from the start Friday, clipping a bank with the front right-hand corner of his Ford Focus. He then spun across the road into another bank, breaking the left-front suspension.

Hirvonen, who was fifth overnight after the opening seven stages, said he still hopes to start as a SuperRally entrant on Saturday, the last day of the Jordan Rally.
