Bleak weather outlook casts doubt on Dover race weekend schedule

Rain has hampered numerous Sprint Cup Series events this season, creating considerable frustration for drivers, teams and fans.

This weekend's activities scheduled for Dover International Speedway could be the wettest yet, however.

With Hurricane Joaquin expected to bring massive amounts of rain to a large portion of the East Coast in the next few days, NASCAR could be forced to reschedule some or all of this weekend's on-track proceedings at the "Monster Mile."

According to weather.com, Joaquin strengthened to major hurricane status as a Category 3 storm Wednesday night, and was hammering the central Bahamas on Thursday morning. Prospects remain worrisome for the U.S. mainland as the official forecast continues with a chance of the East Coast seeing its first landfalling hurricane in 15 months.

Not surprisingly, this weekend's forecast for Dover, Delaware, is uncertain at best and downright bleak at worst.

Weather.com projects an 80 percent chance of rain in Dover on Friday, and a 60 percent chance of wet weather on Saturday when the XFINITY Series is scheduled to compete.

Although Sunday's forecast calls for cloudy skies and just a 20 percent chance of precipitation, there is a coastal flood watch in effect for the Dover area from 6 a.m. ET Friday until 5 p.m. ET Sunday.

The green flag is scheduled to wave on the AAA 400 -- Race No. 3 of the Chase for the Sprint Cup -- at 2:45 p.m. ET Sunday. The 1-mile track does not have lights.
