Another pit-road fire breaks out in 'Dega Sprint Cup race

Published May. 3, 2015 2:17 p.m. ET

For the second week in a row, a fire broke out on pit road as a Richard Childress Racing car was being serviced during Sunday's GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

The incident occurred when Ryan Newman brought his No. 31 RCR Chevrolet to pit road under the first caution the day.

As the gas man disengaged the fuel can to allow the rear tire changer to come around to the left side of the car, fuel spilled on the ground and a hot lug nut sparked the fire. Safety crews were quickly on the scene to extinguish the fire and Newman was able to drive away with no damage to the car.

None of the crew members involved were hurt.

During last weekend's XFINITY Series race at Richmond International Raceway, three crew members were hurt when a fire broke out on Brendan Gaughan's RCR car while it was in the team's pit stall.

Two RCR crew members were taken to the local hospital following that incident, while a crew member from Eric McClure's team was evaluated and released from the infield care center.
