Penske cars have splitters replaced after inspection issue

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) Team Penske replaced splitters on the cars of Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski before Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway, and NASCAR said it would take the splitters back to the research and development center.

NASCAR said it worked with the team during prerace inspection and asked the team to err on the safe side by switching out the splitters. The change did not affect the starting position in the race for Keselowski and Logano.

''We had a splitter on the car we had used and cleaned up and when we went through tech, NASCAR felt it was close to the tolerances of pass/fail, so they asked us to put a new one on,'' said Jeremy Troiano, a spokesman for Logano's team. ''We change splitters a few times per weekend if they are worn so it's not an uncommon thing.''

Logano finished seventh in the race Sunday, and Keselowski was ninth. Logano remained in second place in the Cup standings.
