Edwards fastest of champion contenders in final practice

HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) Carl Edwards was the fastest championship contender in the category that is the best indicator for race readiness.

Edwards was fifth on Saturday's chart for best 10 consecutive lap averages in the final practice session of the season. Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and teammate Kyle Busch will race Sunday for Chase championship. The highest finisher at Homestead-Miami Speedway wins the title.

Johnson, who is seeking a record-tying seventh championship, was ninth in final practice. Busch was 13th and Logano was 21st.

Kevin Harvick, eliminated last week, was fastest.

On pure speed, Martin Truex Jr. was fastest, followed by Edwards.

The season finale is a strong battle among a Ford driver for Roger Penske, a Chevrolet driver for Rick Hendrick and two Toyotas owned by Joe Gibbs.
