Yankees affiliate records 5K inning, which has never been done in MLB
The Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees, the Charleston RiverDogs, had a historic inning on Thursday night, but it also lost them the game. In fact, the feat was so rare that it's never been done in MLB history.
In the top of the 10th inning, Andrew Schwaab and James Reeves combined to strike out five batters. How is that possible, given the fact that there are only three outs in a half-inning? Because two of the strikeouts were on wild pitches, which allowed the hitters to reach at first base.
Unfortunately for the RiverDogs, those wild pitches also led to a four-run inning, which won the game for the Augusta GreenJackets (which is a fantastic team name), 6-2 in extras.
What makes the inning even worse is that the first three batters all struck out. The inning should have been over in short order, but the wild pitch doomed the RiverDogs and allowed the game to continue.
While five strikeouts have never been recorded in one MLB inning, it has been done three before in the minors.
We witnessed history tonight with 5 Ks in one inning by RiverDogs in Top 10th. Has been recorded only three other times in @MiLB history.
