The Cubs get good news about Kyle Schwarber ahead of World Series
The Chicago Cubs have the best offense in baseball when they're at their best, so the thought of them adding yet another impact bat to their lineup before the World Series is scary.
But that's what appears to be happening as Kyle Schwarber works his way back from a torn ACL suffered in an outfield collision in the third game of the season.
Schwarber was getting at bats in the Arizona Fall League on Monday and then planning to join the Cubs in Cleveland before the World Series begins on Tuesday. It's not official he'll be on the roster come Game 1, but Cubs manager Joe Maddon shared some good news on Monday:
"Reports are good. He's been doing everything -- he's been swinging the bat well, he's been running really well actually, he's done some sliding drills and all that kind of stuff just to test the whole thing out. We'll wait til he plays [Monday] and then make an evaluation after that. We don't have to have our rosters set until [Tuesday]. But right now he's doing everything well and right, so he's giving us another option to think about."
Schwarber hit 16 homers with a .355 on-base percentage in 69 games with the Cubs last season after being called up from Triple-A.
He was in Arizona when the Cubs clinched the N.L. pennant last Saturday but didn't completely miss out on the party, as he got his own little champagne party. Making it back and contributing in the World Series would be a great end to a tough year for one of baseball's best young players.
