Phillies sign journeyman pitcher Kevin Correia, who will start this week
The Philadelphia Phillies have brought another arm onto their rotation in the hope of bolstering their short-handed pitching staff.
The team announced on Monday that it signed journeyman right-hander Kevin Correia, who last played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014.
Manager Ryne Sandberg said that Correia is scheduled to start for the Phillies on Friday. He is expected to bring relief to hard-working starters Aaron Harang and Cole Hamels.
"We feel that's necessary for Cole and for Harang," Sandberg said. "They are some of the top leaders in innings, so it'll be good for them."
The Phillies are Correia's sixth team in his 12-year in MLB. The 34-year-old's career record is 76-95 with a 4.59 earned run average.
Correia's outings in his career have been split between starting and relief appearances, as he's started 216 of his 353 total appearances in as a major-league pitcher.
