Draft day will be an interesting time for Matheny, son

The MLB Draft is always an interesting time for a Major League Baseball manager and front office, but it gets even more intense when the manager's son is involved.

That's exactly the scenario St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny will be in this week.

Tate Matheny is projected to be drafted in the first few rounds and the Cardinals may end up taking him.

"For me, personally, the best thing for me would be for him to be with us,” Matheny told Cardinals.com. “Absolutely. They keep scouting him, and the ball is in his court. We've talked with him, too, that if you get to that point where you're the best on the Draft board for the Cardinals and they want to take you, what do you think? He's not ruling that out.

"He's ready for this. He's ready for an opportunity and ready for the decision. It will be fun to watch how it plays out."

However, would Tate want to play for the Cardinals?

Yes, being drafted by any Major League team is a great honor, but playing in the same organization as your father may come with added, and perhaps unwanted, pressure.

"He obviously has a love for this organization, too," Matheny said. "And his thought was, 'What if I am the guy that they really want? Why wouldn't I want to be part of the organization?'"
