Wicker returns to San Diego State as athletic director

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:22 a.m. ET

SAN DIEGO (AP) John David Wicker has returned to San Diego State as athletic director, saying his top priority will be to deal with either building a new football stadium or getting a better deal if the Aztecs are to share a new stadium with the NFL's Chargers.

Wicker was introduced Monday as the replacement for Jim Sterk, who was hired away by Missouri in August.

Wicker was SDSU's deputy AD from 2011 until leaving for Georgia Tech in July 2015 to serve as senior associate athletic director for operations.

He returns to a department whose centerpiece is Steve Fisher's basketball program, and whose football program is on the rise under Rocky Long.

SDSU's football future hinges on whether the Chargers get a new downtown stadium, are forced to remain at Qualcomm Stadium or move to Los Angeles.
