The SEC's future at quarterback looks bright with these five prospects

Published May. 14, 2015 7:06 p.m. ET

It's hard enough to come in and contribute in the SEC as a true freshman, but it's near impossible to do so at the game's most important position.

That being said, 247 Sports recently released a list of five quarterbacks that may not contribute to their teams this season, but could lead them to a bright future in seasons to come.

1) Blake Barnett - Alabama Crimson Tide

The five-star Californian recruit traveled across the country to train under Lane Kiffin and Nick Saban. Barnett enrolled early and has already participated in one spring of practice with the Tide. While Barnett currently sits behind Jake Coker and David Cornell on the depth chart, and only threw four passes in the spring game, he possesses ideal measureables and has the talent to succeed early on in his college career. If Barnett redshirts this season, expect him to put up a fight as the role of starter in 2016 for the Tide.

2) Drew Lock - Missouri Tigers

The Missouri native and U.S. Army All-American game participant has yet to arrive on campus at Mizzou but has talked openly at his plan to unseat incumbent starter Maty Mauk in year one. That may be asking too much of a player that has yet to take a rep with the team, but if Mauk regresses, as some argue he did last season, don't be shocked if the coaching staff gives Lock an opportunity on the field this season.

3) Kyler Murray - Texas A&M Aggies

Murray flirted with the idea of signing with Texas, causing an uproar amongst the two fan bases this offseason. Once Murray decided to stick with his A&M commitment, the team then had to wait out his MLB Draft decision. Now that Murray has said no to both the Longhorns and Major League Baseball, Aggie fans are excited to see what Murray can do on the field. The Allen, Texas native finished his high school career with a perfect 43-0 record and three state championships. He's been called the second coming of Johnny Manziel, which certainly feeds into the hype. Can Murray possibly unseat current Aggie starter Kyle Allen? Even Manziel took a redshirt season before taking the field for A&M.

4) Sheriron Jones - Tennessee Volunteers

The third quarterback signed by the team this offseason, Jones had been committed to the Florida Gators until Will Muschamp was fired. Jones possesses the dual threat combination that Joshua Dobbs has successfully displayed under Butch Jones and very well could have similar on field results once he arrives on campus. Of the other two freshman quarterbacks brought in this season, Quinten Dormady has shown the arm and Jujuan Jennings the legs to succeed in the offense. Can Jones be the first of the three to marry the two traits together?

5) Ty Storey - Arkansas Razorbacks

The Arkansas native turned down both Alabama and Auburn to stay close to home and play for the Hogs. With Brandon Allen only having one more season under helm in Fayetteville, Storey could very well be the next starting quarterback under Bret Bielema.
