Texas has one goal in mind: Win the Big 12

The Texas Longhorns look at their just-completed three-game non-conference schedule and believe they're as prepared as anyone to leap into Big 12 play.

And they will Saturday against No. 24 Oklahoma State, a chance to show the home fans that what they witnessed last week against Cal was real, and a chance to get off to a 1-0 league start against a team some believe will contend for the conference title.

Having played Notre Dame on the road and Cal and Rice at home -- three teams that are a combined 8-1 on the season -- Texas believes it is battle-tested. That's a good thing because the Longhorns face the toughest opening conference stretch of any team in the nation. A road game at No. 2 TCU follows on Oct. 3 and then the Oklahoma game at the Cotton Bowl.

“We’re going to be a big factor in the Big 12 race,” senior running back Johnathan Gray told 247Sports. “It’s just guys coming together and fixing things. We’re 1-2 right now, but everybody starts over. We’re trying to get a Big 12 championship. We can do that.”

Texas is 1-2 record and the upcoming schedule could spell disaster. However, after last week's offensive explosion in the 45-44 loss to Cal, the Longhorns' mindsets are much different than when they left South Bend three weeks ago with their tails tucked between their legs.

"It’s obtainable,” senior linebacker Peter Jikens told 247Sports. “If we play the way we did in the fourth quarter last week, we’ll do just fine. It gave us a lot of confidence. I saw the fire in their eyes.”
