Texas Football: Kent Perkins an Unwelcome Distraction During Bye Week

Texas football is on bye this week as they focus on their Big 12 opener October 1 against Oklahoma State. There is plenty to work on between now and then but that will have to be put on hold. Now, Texas must deal with the DWI arrest of senior offensive lineman Kent Perkins.

Perkins was arrested early Friday morning by Austin PD and charged with driving while intoxicated. Just before 3 AM, Perkins was pulled over just southwest of campus where officers took him into custody without incident. According to jail records, he was booked into Travis County Jail at 4:54 AM, CT.

This misstep could have ramifications for Perkins and the Texas offense. The senior guard has been a key part of an improved offensive line so far in 2016. He started both the Notre Dame and Cal games. While he was held out of the win against UTEP due to injury, his contributions on the field have been hard to miss.

None of that could matter, however, depending on how this investigation pans out. Charlie Strong has taken a hard-line stance against player misconduct which has resulted in a very low rate of incidents like this one. Players can lose their scholarship if they break one of his five core values (be honest, no guns, no stealing, no drugs, and treat women with respect).

That tough stance resulted in a high number of dismissals when he first started. Two players were dismissed for an alleged sexual assault in the dorms. Eight others were ultimately dismissed for violation of team rules. Since then, Texas has not had to deal with player misconduct issues. Until now, that is.

With pressure mounting on Texas to win in 2016 and the team coming off an embarrassing defensive effort against Cal, this was the last thing that Strong and the Texas staff wanted to deal with during the bye. How will Texas’ tough discipline approach affect Perkins? And how will that impact the offense moving forward?

In a bye week where they were already dealing with some big questions, you can just add these to the list.
