Texas DC compares Cal QB to old Cal QB, NFL star

Published Sep. 16, 2015 6:03 p.m. ET

The Texas Longhorns defense has had its issues through two games, allowing 66 points while having trouble containing mobile quarterbacks.

The task changes this week with big, pro-stye quarterback Jared Goff, who leads the Cal Golden Bears into Austin on Saturday night.

Texas defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, who has had to replace six starters on a defense that was a bright spot in 2014, jumped on the Goff bandwagon this week with a comparison to a past Cal quarterback that's been making the rounds lately.

That quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, has turned out to be pretty good in the NFL, too.

Goff could well become first quarterback taken in the 2015 NFL draft. Bedford hopes his defense doesn't help inflate Goff's stats, but that's going to take a supreme effort by the Texas defense. The unit allowed less accomplished Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire to complete 19-of-22 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns without an interception two weeks ago.

Goff could double that number of pass attempts. If he doubles the completions, yards and touchdowns, it's going to be a long night for the Longhorns.
