Shoop to take over as Tennessee's defensive coordinator

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:47 p.m. ET

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Bob Shoop has agreed in principle to leave Penn State and become Tennessee's defensive coordinator.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones announced the move Saturday night. Shoop said in a statement that ''this was not an easy decision and one that I didn't take lightly.''

Tennessee athletic department spokesman Ryan Robinson said Shoop agreed to a three-year contract worth $1.15 million annually. Robinson said Tennessee isn't responsible for any buyout Shoop owes to get out of his Penn State contract.

Shoop has coordinated units that have been ranked among the top 25 teams nationally in total defense each of the last five seasons.

Shoop replaces John Jancek, who was Tennessee's defensive coordinator the last three seasons. Jones announced Monday that Jancek wouldn't be back next season.
