Peters TD carries Houston Baptist past Texas Southern, 24-20

HOUSTON (AP) Terrance Peters broke loose for a 51-yard touchdown run with 4:08 left in the game to carry Houston Baptist to a 24-20 win over cross-town rival Texas Southern in the Huskies home opener Saturday night.

Texas Southern rallied from 10 points down, 17-7, to take a 20-17 lead on a pair of Austin Watts touchdowns. Averion Hurts found Watts from 8-yards out to get within 17-13 after the Huskies (1-1) blocked the PAT. With 5:53 left in the game Watts pulled in a Houston Baptist punt and raced 93-yards to give the Tigers the lead, 20-17.

Peters finished with 155 yards on 14 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns to lead Houston Baptist. The Huskies rolled up 315 total yards rushing, averaging just under six yards per carry. Tony Dawson added 150 yards passing, completing 19 of 27.

Hurts finished 13 of 33 for 143 yards and a touchdown for Texas Southern (0-2).
