Ohio State to play Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl
Ohio State and Notre Dame both entered their final games of the season with national championship hopes still alive.
Things didn't work out for either of them, so instead the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish will face each other in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1.
The two programs have met five times in the past, the most recent a 34-20 victory for the Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl following the 2005 season.
Ohio State averaged 9.64 yards per offensive play that day, a school record at the time and still the second-best.
The Fighting Irish won the first two meetings, 18-13 in Columbus in 1935 and 7-2 a year later in South Bend.
Ohio State swept a two-game series 60 years later, winning 45-26 in Columbus in 1995 and 29-16 in South Bend the following season.
The schools are scheduled to meet in Columbus in 2022 and in South Bend the following year.
