Northwestern CB Matthew Harris says he's giving up football
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) Northwestern cornerback Matthew Harris has announced his retirement from football.
The senior had not played since he was injured Sept. 10 against Illinois State. Video showed Harris getting hit in the head while making a tackle.
Several media outlets reported that Harris is giving up the game because of concussions. Northwestern spokesman Paul Kennedy would not confirm those reports, and a news release issued by the school cited no reason for Harris' retirement.
Harris called retiring from football ''an incredibly difficult decision'' and thanked coaches, staff, teammates and family.
Harris intercepted four passes last season and led the Wildcats with 13 pass breakups.
Nevada running back Akeel Lynch and Kansas offensive lineman Jordan Shelley-Smith retired from football earlier this season because of concussions.
