N.C. State leading rusher Matt Dayes out for season

N.C. State suffered a serious setback Thursday when it learned that leading rusher, running back Matt Dayes, will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

“I’m disappointed for Matt because he was having a really good year,” N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said in a statement. “But in football you’ve got to have a ‘next man up’ mentality and I’m confident that his teammates will be ready to take on bigger roles and be successful.”

The 5-foot-9, 203-pound junior was the ACC’s third-leading rusher with 865 yards. Dayes averaged 6.5 yards per attempt and scored an ACC-best 12 rushing touchdowns. The versatile Dayes also caught 24 passes for 172 yards.

It appeared Dayes was on pace to play this Saturday when the Wolfpack (5-3, 1-3) face Boston College (3-6, 0-6), but after seeing a foot specialist it was determined he would not play another snap this season.

“Matt’s a tough guy,” Doeren said. “His pain tolerance is incredibly high. He wanted to come back in the game on Saturday, but the doctors didn’t think it was the right thing to do.”

With Dayes sidelined it’s expected that junior Jaylen Samuels will handle a bulk of the running back duties.
