Musings from Tuesday press conference
Steve Spurrier previewed this week's opponent in Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon.
"Kentucky is a pretty good team," says Spurrier. "They are very capable of having a winning season, and going to bowl games. Mark Stoops I think has done an excellent job there, and they're very close to being a winning team, and very easily could be this year."
The Wildcats had an impressive showing versus Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening week. Running back Stanley "Boom" Williams demonstrated why he's one of the most underrated players in the country. The tailback rushed for 135 yards on only 10 carries. Kentucky also has a dangerous receiving corps, led by Garrett Johnson.
Stoops' team has a lot of motivation heading into the contest. For one, it desperately wants to play in a bowl game. A win versus a proven program in South Carolina will only aid in their goal. Additionally, the Wildcats have been extremely bad on the road in recent memory. Stoops' bunch is hoping to reverse this trend.
South Carolina also hopes to get better balance offensively, which starts at the quarterback position. While the Gamecocks might not resemble a pass-happy Florida team from Spurrier's past, starter Connor Mitch will need to be more consistent throwing the football down the field. There's also a chance freshman signal-caller Lorenzo Nunez gets a look on Saturday.
This will not be an easy game for South Carolina. Kentucky is a hungry program, and one with a fair amount of young talent.
"[We've] got a lot of improving to do," said Spurrier. "And hopefully it'll show up this week."
Spurrier: "Winning by three or four TDs. I don't know if that's in our DNA." #Gamecocks
