Michigan State Recruiting: 5-star WR Donovan Peoples-Jones picks Michigan

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 5:01 p.m. ET

Michigan State recruiting didn’t have much of a shot, but missed out on five-star wide out Donovan Peoples-Jones.

In the least surprising news of the week, Michigan landed five-star wide out Donovan Peoples-Jones from Detroit Cass Tech. Michigan State recruiting can technically file it under the ‘miss’ category, but there was no real shot for the Spartans to land him anyway.

Peoples-Jones has connections to Michigan and he’s been leading toward them since the get-go. While Michigan State didn’t have much of a shot, it’s still an impactful get as he’s the No. 1 receiver in the 2017 recruiting class and the eighth-best recruit overall, according to 247Sports.

Mark Dantonio probably didn’t expect to land him as he hasn’t been on campus in a while and there was no momentum going the Spartans’ way. It was seemingly a two-program race between Michigan and Ohio State at the end despite Michigan State, Florida and Florida State making his top five.

Michigan is building yet another elite recruiting class under Jim Harbaugh and that’s one way to replace the 40-plus seniors and early departures.

The Spartans, on the other hand, will need to find a way to add another receiver to their 2017 recruiting class. In fact, the Spartans missed out on KJ Hamler last week and already knew that they’d have to put in more effort with other top targets at the position.

One guy on the recruiting board who could ease the pain of missing out on Hamler to Penn State and Peoples-Jones to Michigan would be Jaylen Harris. The four-star wide out from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, might be down to Ohio State and MSU, or so it seems.
