Just days before Saturday's key matchup against No. 18 West Virginia, Maryland suspended wide receivers Ronnie Tyler and Quintin McCree after an altercation in which Tyler is accused of punching a man in front of a police officer.

According to the Washington Times, Tyler was charged early Thursday with second-degree assault after allegedly punching a 33-year-old New York man in the face during an argument outside a 7-Eleven. McCree was reportedly present during the incident but was not arrested or charged.

"It happened right in front of one of our guys," said Marc Limansky, the university police spokesman.

Police said Tyler fled the scene and was arrested shortly afterward on the College Park campus.

Tyler, a senior who caught six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in the Terrapins' season-opening win over Miami, is scheduled to appear for trial Nov. 1. McCree had seven catches for 39 yards in the opener.

"The expectation of our program is for our student-athletes to conduct themselves in the proper manner academically, athletically and socially," coach Randy Edsall said in a statement Thursday night. "Unfortunately, Quintin and Ronnie fell short of these expectations."

Edsall gave no indication of when either player might be reinstated to the team.

The suspensions leave the Terps with holes to fill behind junior Kevin Dorsey, who caught eight balls for 124 yards against Miami.
