LSU transitioning to 3-4 defense?
Is LSU moving toward a 3-4 defense? That seems to be the case judging by their recruiting, as pointed out by the New Orleans Time-Picayune.
The Tigers on Monday landed a commitment from defensive tackle Glen Logan, a highly touted 6-foot-4, 300-pounder. While that fits the description of a 4-3 tackle, Logan said that he has been told that he will play defensive end. A 300-pound defensive end in a 4-3 would certainly be unusual, but in a 3-4 it'd make perfect sense.
The Times-Picayune also notes that redshirt sophomore Maquedius Bain, another 300-pounder, was shifted to defensive end for spring ball after previously having played only defensive tackle. Perhaps LSU sees a pair of future 3-4 ends in Bain and Logan.
An even bigger need, though, is at linebacker, and LSU reportedly is recruiting numerous hybrid pass rushers, the type who could playlinebacker or defensive end at the college level. Not coincidentally, those are also the types of players who man the outside linebacker spot in a 3-4 as primarily pass rushers.
The Times-Picayune also notes that former LSU defensive end Danielle Hunter, after being drafted by the Vikings last month, said that he left school early in part because the Tigers were changing their defense. It wasn't clear what he was referring to at the time, but a transition to a 3-4 might very well have been what he was hinting at.
While there's unlikely to be a wholesale change this year, it wouldn't be a surprise to see LSU show multiple defenses this season and begin implementing a 3-4 on a more full-time basis in 2016.
