Late October thoughts about the SEC West

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

As we prepare for the stretch run, here are some thoughts about the SEC West.

1. Alabama (5-0) – the Tide are really good, and it will come as no surprise if they win another national title this year. Nick Saban only has one undefeated team through a full season (2009), however, so one of their remaining games could wind up as a loss.

2. Texas A&M (4-1) – the Aggies nearly had Alabama cornered, but they allowed the Tide another one of their patented non-offensive touchdowns. This team is really good and is positioned well for a New Year’s Six bowl.

3. Auburn (3-1) – don’t look now but the Tigers just steam-rolled MSU and Arkansas in two straight weeks and control their own destiny in the division. If they get past the trip to Oxford with a win they have Vandy and UGA before a potential winner-take-all Iron Bowl (which we had in 2013 and it was a dandy).

3. LSU (3-1) – Coach O’s got his Tigahs looking good. Now they have two weeks to prepare for Bama. A&M had the same and did fairly well, but LSU has the athletes and home field advantage so who knows. Let’s take another look at Leonard Fournette running over the Rebs:

5. Ole Miss (1-3) – speaking of the Rebs, their super-season has been derailed and they are now 3-4 overall. Auburn is a 2.5 point favorite next week in Oxford – if they lose that game they still have a trip to Texas A&M on the books prior to the Egg Bowl. Could get interesting.

5. Arkansas (1-3) – how do you get beat 56-3? This is a week after a huge win over Ole Miss. They have the Rebels number for sure. Week 9 is a bye week to lick their wounds.

5. Mississippi State (1-3) – circle the Samford game. Underline it and put it in bold. This is our hope to avoid a double digit losing season.
