Gators suspend three players for the opener

Published Aug. 21, 2015 5:48 p.m. ET

The Florida Gators will start the season without three experienced players expected to contribute this season as defensive end Alex McCallister, defensive back Marcus Maye and receiver Latroy Pittman have all been suspended one game for violating university athletic department policy.

McCallister and Maye were likely to begin the season as starters for the Gators, however they will now have to wait until the ECU game to get their first starts of the season.

McCallister returns as the team's second leading sacker after recording six in 2014 while Maye has made 78 tackles and two interceptions in 11 career starts for the team.

The Gators open the season Sept. 5 at home against New Mexico State.
