FSU Football: Shutting Down Derwin James Is Right Move

FSU football coach Jimbo Fisher announced Derwin James will miss the reminder of the season. We discuss why it’s the right move to shut him down.

We wrote weeks ago that it would be in the best interest of Derwin James to sit the rest of the season. FSU football coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed that was the case on his weekly call-in show Wednesday night.

James will not play in the final three regular season games against Boston College, Syracuse and Florida. However, Fisher didn’t rule out the possibility of James playing in FSU’s bowl game later this year.

It’s the right move, and I’d keep James out of the bowl game if I were Jimbo Fisher. What’s the point of coming back to play in a game that ultimately means nothing?

Sitting out the regular season and the bowl game allows James to continue rehabbing the knee without risk of injury in a game.

Of course, James could re-injure the knee in rehab, but the likelihood of that happening is a lot less than if he played in a game.

James already has tons of film for NFL scouts, and is already recognized as one of the best safeties in the country.

He’ll be a “NFL Combine Warrior” with scouts salivating to draft him after his  junior season barring any setbacks.

FSU should be able to win out the remaining three regular season games without James in the secondary.

It’s the right move to shut him down and not rush him back from injury, and FSU should consider sitting him for the bowl game too.
