Derrek Pitts De-Commits From Penn State

In a move that comes as no surprise, Charleston, West Virginia safety Derrek Pitts has de-committed from Penn State and re-opened his recruitment.

The recruitment of Derrek Pitts was one of the stranger ones I have ever followed. The three-star safety prospect’s recruitment took yet another twist on Monday afternoon. This twist came when he de-committed from Penn State.

Pitts originally committed to the Nittany Lions on July 27th. This commitment came as a bit of a surprise because he was considered to be a huge West Virginia lean prior to his commitment. Due to this, Pitts de-committing is not much of a surprise.

If you read last week’s recruiting round up, I hinted at a de-commitment over the weekend. And, yes, Derrek Pitts is who I was talking about. His de-commitment just came a couple days later than I expected.

I expected Derrek Pitts to de-commit this past Saturday. He visited Morgantown for West Virginia’s victory over Kansas State, and I expected him to flip while on his visit. He did not, however, and re-opened his recruitment this afternoon.

The loss of Pitts is a big one for the Nittany Lions. In my opinion, he was the most talented player in Penn State’s 2017 recruiting class. However, Penn State is better off with Pitts de-committing now than two or three months from now when it would be much more difficult to find a replacement for him in this recruiting class.

With the loss of Pitts, Penn State’s 2017 recruiting class now has just one safety. That lone safety is four-star Virginia native Jonathan Sutherland. I am not one hundred percent certain the staff will pursue another safety in this class, but if they do Scott Nelson is a name to watch.

With the de-commitment of Derrek Pitts Penn State’s 2017 recruiting class now has 14 commitments. This is good for 23rd best in the country, and sixth best in the Big Ten according to 247 Sports.

Every college football program experiences de-commitments. Hopefully, Derrek Pitts is Penn State’s lone de-commitment in this recruiting cycle. So, please, do not panic and act like the sky is falling everyone.
