Colts pick 'other' NDSU prospect, Haeg

(STATS) - Carson Wentz was worthy of the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft. He's the first to say his left tackle deserves some of the credit.

The Indianapolis Colts thought the same, selecting Joe Haeg of North Dakota State in the fifth round with the 155th overall selection of the draft Saturday.

The 6-foot-6, 305-pound Haeg, a former walk-on, protected Wentz's blind side over the last two seasons and missed only one start over the last four years for the five-time reigning FCS national champion Bison. He was a two-time first-team All-American and the only offensive lineman to be named a finalist for the 2015 STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year.

Considered athletic and technically sound, Haeg will need to increase his core strength for the next level and could convert to guard.

The selection of Wentz (Philadelphia Eagles) and Haeg marked the first time North Dakota State has had at least two draft choices since running back Lamar Gordon (St. Louis Rams, third round) and offensive tackle Pete Campion (Carolina Panthers, seventh round) in 2002.
