Chris Petersen: No separation in Washington's QB battle

Published Aug. 14, 2015 2:57 p.m. ET

On Wednesday, Washington Huskies head coach Chris Petersen talked with the media after practice and discussed the state of his QB competition.

While Petersen seemed pleased by the way the three competitors had performed, he also said that the race is still wide open and no one had separated himself from the group.

Percy Allen of The Seattle Times was at practice and provided an in-depth look at Petersen's answers relating to the QB position. Here are a few of those:

On if QB Jeff Lindquist is a sturdy guy:

“He is. … We got to get his helmet to fit better. You usually don’t find that out until you play in a game so that’s some good work there.”

On if the QB's benefit from playing against a live defense more than other players:

“I think everybody. Like we were just talking about, you can’t get enough live reps. It’s just different when you’re going live. And the quarterbacks are not live very much. And so when they get their opportunities when we’re scrimmaging or whatever, those are valuable, valuable reps because we take a lot of reps out here through fall camp and they are slightly different when you know you’re not getting hit.”

On which QB is making the best decisions:

“There’s not one guy. There’s not one guy. … They’re all pretty good. Nobody is right where we need him to be. And I’m not saying that to keep anybody, that’s the reality of the situation. They’re all doing a pretty good job, but don’t think one has separated himself yet.”

On a timetable for the QB decision:

“I was hoping to make the decision about five days ago, but that’s passed. It’s not going to be done until late. We know that just probably with how this thing is going, unless things change dramatically in the next week. Then we’ll probably take it the following week as well.”
