Bedford: Strong hasn't said 'anything to anybody' about staff changes

Texas coach Charlie Strong is widely expected to make major changes to his offensive coaching staff. But what about on the other side considering the Longhorns' defense has slipped considerably from last season?

Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford acknowledged to reporters that his unit may be “one of the worst” in school history. Bedford, who has been with Strong since 2010 at Louisville, said there has been no talk internally about potential changes.

“Charlie hasn’t said anything to anybody, but as the head coach, that’s what they’re supposed to do,” Bedford told reporters during his weekly press conference Tuesday. “To keep coaches working hard, to keep them on edge, a lot of times you don’t tell them certain things. Therefore, you stay motivated.”

On Saturday, Texas (4-7, 3-5 Big 12) takes on Baylor (9-2, 6-2) and its No. 1-ranked offense, although third-string quarterback Chris Johnson will be under center. The Bears have plenty of motivation -- a win and they secure a berth in the Sugar Bowl.

The Longhorns won't be going to any bowl, but a win over Baylor could certainly lift morale and raise a few eyebrows around the state as Strong and his coaches -- the ones who remain -- hit the recruiting trail.

After last year's defensive unit carried the Longhorns to six wins before running out of steam in the final two games against TCU and  Arkansas in the Texas Bowl, this season's unit hasn't come close to matching it. It is likely to finish as the worst statistical defense in Texas history.

"I’m going to take the fifth on that,” Bedford said. "But I do think that you need to get a (recruiting) class that’s better than the class we got this past year. And I think that’s a really good class.”
