Bearkats sign pair of touted QBs

(STATS) - Sam Houston State will return two outstanding quarterbacks who will vie for playing time for the second consecutive season.

When Jared Johnson and Jeremiah Briscoe are done with their careers, there figures to be another significant battle.

Coach K.C. Keeler's program signed two Texas quarterbacks as part of its 16-member class Wednesday - 6-foot-6, 225-pound Cody Brewer from Corpus Christi, and 6-3, 228-pound Caleb Griffin from Keller. Both are considered three-star pro-style signal callers.

Brewer originally was a Washington State commit. Griffin also drew FBS interest.

The Bearkats' class included four transfers, including former Missouri defensive lineman Marcus Loud and former Texas cornerback Jermaine Roberts Jr.

"In my 30 years of coaching, this has been our most challenging recruiting class," Keeler said. "Going all the way into December in the playoffs, and then down three coaches and having three new FBS head coaches in Texas going after our players has made it a challenge. There was a lot of time we had to play catch-up. It was a challenge to keep this class intact. We did a phenomenal job. But the end result of the hard work has been one of our best signing classes ever."

Sam Houston finished 11-4 and ranked third last season after reaching the FCS playoff semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Johnson, a junior, was named the Southland Conference's offensive player of the year, but during the playoffs the sophomore Briscoe was the standout behind center.
