Aggies ready to consistently contend? Sumlin says so
Kevin Sumlin is entering his fourth year at Texas A&M, and after an eventful first three years featuring Johnny Football, some poor defenses and a regression to 8-5 in 2014, he says his program is finally ready to consistently contend in the SEC West.
Speaking on The Paul Finebaum Show on Tuesday, Sumlin explained exactly what it is that has him feeling more confident this year about the overall state of the team.
"We look at ourselves as a developmental program," Sumlin told Finebaum. "There’s really only a couple ways to get better. Coaching is a big part of that. Philosophically, how are you going to play in this league?
"The second thing is recruiting and depth. For the first time since I’ve been here, we don’t have huge holes in our roster. We’re thin in a couple places, but this is the first time I didn’t have to say, ‘Look, guys, we have to get this guy ready to play and start the first game as a true freshman.'
"What that tells me is we’re starting to develop depth, which we need."
Coaching helps, of course -- Sumlin brought in longtime LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis this offseason specifically to turn around a unit that's been the worst in the SEC in each of the past two years.
But personnel matters, too, and in that regard, it seems that Sumlin's strong recruiting efforts over the past few seasons are starting to pay off.
